Source grew out of a longing to conduct a space of isolation to one of intimate connection. Inspired by fibers’ gift of comfort, I designed the piece with the intention of grounding a location of gathering, reflection, and healing. I discovered, the making process alone achieved all three. Dying the yarn brought me closer with my surrounding environment by learning the names and homes of plants that offered color. The consuming time required to piece together the rug brought my work into my social and domestic spaces where friends and family quickly joined in preparing yarn strips and shared stories of the roles crafting played in their lives. When I was working independently, I often entered meditative states while repeatedly latching that allowed me to refocus my attention to my mind and body. In its finished form, Source is a portal to the connective power of invested care and extended attention.
